About the shop
Jonas Whitfield. Mason.
I'm a third-generation mason. My grandfather laid brick in Pittsburgh through the forties and fifties; my father took over the trowel after him; and I've spent the last twenty-some years quietly learning what they tried to teach me.
Hammer & Trowel is small by design. I take on a select few projects a year so I can be on site for every one of them — mixing mortar, hand-raking joints, and making sure the work would pass my grandfather's inspection. He was tough.
Most of what we do is brick and stone repair on the older homes of the South Hills — Tudors, Foursquares, brick Colonials, the occasional stone Cape. I love these houses. They were built to last, and with a little attention, they will.
